The Calling of Writing
Samantha Gualito is a woman in her early 30s who works as an English teacher at Latino Youth High School. When Gualito was only 4 years old, she relocated to the USA, and along this journey, she discovered she loved reading and writing, which are the things that helped her learn English. Since a child, Gualito has been anti-social and would rather be alone and spend time in nature birding.
Life journey
Samantha Gualito was four years old when she came from Mexico City to Chicago in 1995 with her parents when they first got here. They moved in with her aunt in a neighborhood called Hermosa, and then she was enrolled in Mary Lyon, a school that's located in Belmont-Cragin. She quickly adapted to English due to her being really young when they decided to move to Chicago growing up. Gualito and her parents would move to different houses during these times. She realized she had a passion for reading and writing and that she also enjoyed playing guitar, which she taught herself by tabs while growing up. Gualito’s parents were extremely strict and would limit the things she was able to do, so when she started high school and she had free time due to half days in school, she would use this time to do such things as explore and spend time with friends. “It was really nice to have that freedom.” That would be her escape from feeling trapped.
Motivations
Gualito was highly motived into learning due to her being the daughter of immigrants she knew she loved reading and writing so she took those skills and turn them into a career when gualito started collage she choose community collage due to not wanting to be in debt and knowing its cheaper when she first started collage she enrolled in Harold washington 2009 through 2012 while being in Harold Gualito accomplish to get her associates degree during this time period she enrolled in roosevelt working towards getting her BA in english during these times she was pushing away from the idea of being a teacher after being told by peers she should ahead and just be a teacher so after collage she started working at Discovery Education which it was an office job while working this job she still knew she still loved writing and reading but the job got really boring that she started to volunteer as a tutor and started working with kids while doing all of this she realised she did want to pursue being a teacher knowing she had some experience working with kids now so she knew “it was the next step’’ She started to work as a teacher at Latino Youth High School. As an English teacher, she really found passion and the motivation to be at work. She loves being able to help kids and learning how to help different kids with different needs. “There’s not one day I wake up not wanting to go to work.”
Goals
Gualito is working towards her goals, which are getting her second master's and her ESL endorsement. Gualito is trying to secure how her future will go; she knows she has a passion and love towards being able to help young people while doing what she likes. Her plan is to work in her current job right now while she's young and able to handle a full class, but once she gets older, she wants to focus more on working one-on-one and being a reading specialist instead of teaching a big class. Her goal is to be able to do the job she loves so she's able to have a good financial life so one day she can have a big house and raise chickens and be able to enjoy nature, which she enjoys a lot. She also wants to help retire her parents, who were the motivation for why she became somebody who follows her dreams and encourages her to work hard to achieve her goals.
