Melisa Poems

I am the sun

You speak to me
As if I asked to be worshiped
As if I demanded your eyes.

All I ever did was rise

Everyday
I pour myself across your world
Light, warmth
A pulse of gold that keeps you alive,

And still,
You curse me for shinning to hard,
For daring to exist above your comfort.

You forget
How i hold the sky together,
How every color you love,
Is born through me.

I have watched you chase shadows
And call it peace.
You hide behind curtains,
Turn your faces away,
As if darkness ever gave you breath.

Yet when I leave,
You call me back.

You build fires in your homes,
Pretending they are me.
You whisper my name through your teeth,
And still complain.

I do not need your approval.
I do not seek your thanks.

I burn because I must.
I shine because i can

And even when you turn away,
I am still here

Steady, endless,
Loving you
The only way I know how.

Ode to baby violet

Before you, the air was quiet
Not sad, but still,
Like a house that forgot how to laugh.
Days passed in their usual color,
A kind of gray that never quite left the
Windows.

Then you came
Tiny, perfect,
A petal of sunrise wrapped in a blanket.
You smelled of new beginnings,
That soft, milky sweetness
That only babies carry
Like heaven whispering through your hair.

Violet, your giggles rearranged the world.
Your coos turned the silence into song,
Now, light plays in corners it once avoided,
And even tired hearts remember how to
Dance.

It's a wonder, this love
How it stretches and grows,
How it spills over coffee cups and phone calls,
How one small niece can make
The ordinary feel holy

You are the reason laughter feels real again.
The reason the word joy

Finally makes sense.

Little Violet
Beautiful, boundless,
You didn't just arrive
You restored us.
